Why was the original 2005 test still referenced after K15 switched from “old technology” to “new technology”?

A successful BS 8414 test was conducted in 2005 using ‘old technology’ K15. In 2006, K15 changed to ‘new technology’ K15.  As ‘new technology’ K15 used substantially the same chemistry as ‘old technology’ K15, the 2005 test continued to be referenced. In hindsight, Kingspan Insulation accepts that a new BS 8414 test should have been carried out at the time of switching to “new technology” K15. Today, there is a suite of successful large-scale BS 8414 tests of cladding systems containing K15 to support fire engineering judgements.

Kingspan Insulation wrote to fire engineers on 23 October 2020 confirming the withdrawal of the 2005 test (along with the withdrawal of the two 2014 tests referenced in another FAQ). Withdrawal was a prudent step undertaken by Kingspan Insulation UK as a responsible manufacturer.

There is presently a suite of successful large-scale BS 8414 tests of cladding systems, commissioned by Kingspan, which incorporate K15. They evidence the fact that multiple different cladding  systems incorporating K15 can pass the test.  This is critical information to help inform appropriate fire engineering judgements by suitably qualified building professionals.
